Kim Sterelny
Kim Sterelny has two main research foci. One is the evolution of cognition, culture and behaviour (mostly, but not exclusively) in the human lineage. The other is on evolutionary theory more generally. Here he has worked on (i) the evolution of Inheritence systems, especially on the evolutionary role of non-genetic Inheritence; (ii) the relationship between ecology and evolution, and how the two should be synthesises; (iii) and, especially, the issue of scale in evolution; the relationship between microevolution over short periods in local populations and large scale patterns and processes. His most recent books are a second edition of Dawkins versus Gould (2007), and Thought in a Hostile World (2003). A co-authored monograph (with James Maclaurin) on the nature of biodiversity is due to appear in 2008. He is currently working on two major collaborative projects. One, on the evolution of complexity, is with Brett Calcott. The other, on the evolutionary roots of human co-operation, and the links between co-operation, culture and cognitive evolution, is with Ben Jeffares, and some elements of that project will be trialed in the Jean Nicod lectures in Paris, May 2008.
